Catch Report: 18/12/08

What a different a day makes…this phrase is gonna crop up loads in these reports….anyone have any suggestions to change this cliché…? Answers to my e-mail please…

The weather today was bloody horrible….even the Dorset Police Forces answer to Miami Vice couldn’t bring the sun out.  Fishing was almost as bad as the weather. Only one small Cod to Dave a few whiting and mixed rubbish.  There may have bee a couple of rays…?

One thing I did learn today was a real eye opener.  Let me explain these lads are all very into their match fishing…I myself am not.  I can’t get my head around wanting to catch little fish instead of specimens when you aren’t actually in a comp. Anyway Stuart and I were trying for some whiting for supper, I’m knocking out loadsa of Pout and the occasional Whiting on my trusty old Mackie feathers and pike rod Stuart isn’t catching anything except proper Whiting and he’s getting some very funny looking bites too – different feathers, different bait….? None of these….a different part of the sea is where the answer lies….He was fishing between 15 and 20 ft off the bottom…..I tried it swapping the weight for a little speed jig and it worked a treat. I even had a couple on the bare Pirk.  There are millions of Sprats down there at the moment and everything is feeding on em’.  I don’t know if it was because of this or what, all I do know is it saves catching dozens of pout and then chucking then back with little chance of survival.
